How it's calculated

Every day, from the date you choose to the last day with a price, $1 of ethereum is bought at that day's price. Everything bought is added up and valued at the latest price. There's no model and no projection: it's what would have happened with the prices that actually existed.

The exercise doesn't deduct fees. In real life every purchase has a cost, and with one-dollar purchases that cost adds up.

Prices start on August 8, 2015, when ethereum began trading. That's why you can't pick an earlier date.

Prices: Coin Metrics Community Data, one price per day, checked from the very first day against the daily close of other exchanges: Poloniex (2015–2016), Coinbase (2016–2017) and Bitstamp (since 2017).
