Sat
The smallest unit of bitcoin: one bitcoin is 100 million sats.
One bitcoin can be split into 100,000,000 equal parts, called satoshis or sats, after Satoshi Nakamoto, bitcoin's creator. You don't need to buy a whole bitcoin: you can own 0.001 bitcoin, which is 100,000 sats.
On October 26, 2026, one dollar buys 1,251 sats. At the start of 2015 it bought 317,686. The chart shows how many sats a dollar bought each month: when bitcoin rises, a dollar buys fewer sats.
Counting in sats makes it easy to talk about small amounts without so many zeros: “5,000 sats” instead of “0.00005 bitcoin”.
A sat is 10−8 BTC, the smallest unit the bitcoin network records. Sats per dollar = 100,000,000 / bitcoin's price in dollars.
Since there will never be more than 21 million bitcoins, there will never be more than 2.1 quadrillion sats (21 × 1014).
Sats one dollar bought at the end of each month. Logarithmic scale.
